Man killed while crossing Route 146 at Sayles Hill Road

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A man was killed while crossing Route 146 on Sunday at an intersection that has a long history of vehicle accidents.

Raymond Mercier, a 57-year-old Attleboro resident, died at Rhode Island Hospital after he was struck crossing Route 146 on foot near Sayles Hill Road Sunday night. Police say Mercier was attempting to cross the northbound lanes at the intersection when a vehicle driven by a North Smithfield resident collided with him, causing injuries.

Mercier was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the vehicle did not have any injuries.

Police are still investigating the incident but said speed and impairment do not appear to be factors at this time. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Rhode Island State Police Lincoln Barracks at 401-444-1100.
