ARLENE VIOLET - It’s hard to be upbeat

Like most people I love the idea of a new year. Symbolically, it reminds us of the fact that we made it through another year and that we have a future where we can change things, well, mostly about ourselves. It’s like a new lease on life.

So, as 2019 rolled into town I read with anticipation the comments of the newly installed state officers and legislators. I looked to see if the President had ended his temper tantrum which has resulted in a shutdown of government. If push came to shove would the United States Republican senators approve a budget which it exactly passed and sent to the House or would they turn tail?

So, we know the answer to all these questions by now. There is only one conclusion. There is a slow-motion crisis in America and in Rhode Island.

Take the State of Rhode Island. Nothing much has changed. The same elected officials are repeating the same mantra. In fact, they sound delusional. How far from the truth can it be that Rhode Island has been transformed into a role model for the rest of the country? The sorry results of the educational performances of students should create a gag reflex to such a claim. Banning the media initially from the inaugural “ball” so the public wouldn’t know who the insiders were who picked up the tab was a harbinger of continued contempt for transparency.

The legislative leaders’ respective hands must still be pounding as they patted themselves on the back. A partial coup in the House of Representatives sputtered to a halt as the Speaker peremptorily rejected reasonable proposals of reform. Like Donald Trump he punished those who wouldn’t tow the party line by dumping Rep. Katherine Kazarian (D-East Providence) from her role on a committee or dissing the so-called Reform Caucus proposals which correctly included 48 hours’ notice before action on the Budget.

The national scene is also pock-marked by the antics of an immature President. This is a time when truths that seemed self- evident in the Constitution are no more. Truth is a fiction when the President has told a documented 7,000 or so lies at the rate of five falsehoods a day since in office. Federal workers are toy pieces in a game of chicken. Anyone who disagrees with the President, like Defense Secretary Mattis or former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, are vilified after their service. The President acts like the bully know-it-all we have met too many times in our lives.

Lest the reader think that I blame Mr. Trump as the cause of our democratic deterioration, let me say I do not. He is a symptom. In his war on U.S. institutions and tenets which govern this country’s democracy, he is emboldened by his party in Congress, particularly Sen. Mitch McConnell, and his many supporters throughout the country and here in Rhode Island.

I dislike that I am not more optimistic in 2019. The rule of law has seemed to go out the window. Without it the capricious, the authoritarian, and the tyrannical rule supreme. Rhode Island Democrats might like to take stock of their credentials lest the Democrats defeat democracy in this state. Similarly, self-evaluation is a must for Trump supporters. Before political party, we are all Americans.

Comments

With all due respect, Atty. Violet, your 'hatred' of Pres. Trump is DEPICTED throughout your article. Although he has accomplished more in two years than any other president, his FOES refuse to give him any credit for his accomplishments, including yourself. Please check them out online. Let's be FAIR and give CREDIT where it is DUE!

You have viewed the GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN as being due to the President's having a TEMPER TANTRUM. Then, what would you call the DEMOCRAT'S not providing FUNDS for building a BORDER WALL? Do YOU want a WALL or BARRIER built, Atty. Violet, or are you one of those people who have MORE COMPASSION for ILLEGAL ALIENS vs. our own people in AMERICA?

Atty. Violet, you wrote, “...he punished those who wouldn’t tow the party line...” It would be very interesting to KNOW EXACTLY what you truly mean by “towing the party line”. As you know, this is exactly what happens with people who are in leadership positions, i. e., they SELECT those who have the same goals and perceptions, as they do. They certainly don't surround themselves with their foes!

You also wrote that... “the President has told a documented 7,000 or so lies at the rate of five falsehoods a day since in office.” WOW! Where did you get THAT information, and could you direct me to your source? Are you aware that Pres. Hussein Obama also FIRED Defense Secretary Mattis in the past? Check it out!

You also wrote... “The President acts like the bully know-it-all we have met too many times in our lives. Well, he is the FIRST President who “says it like it is”, and yes, this is viewed by some people as “bullying” because it's so hard for them to ACCEPT the TRUTH! Yes, admittedly, he could have refrained from using certain words in the past....BUT....he NEVER used the FOUL language like the NEW Michigan Moslem Congresswoman did when attacking Pres. Trump. What did the DEMOCRATS do about this..........NOTHING!!! They ALL claimed that “sticking to the issues was more important...that they weren't in charge of how their cohorts should express themselves verbally.” Also, whether it's acceptable or not, do you approve of a Congress person being sworn in on the Koran vs. the BIBLE as TRUE AMERICANS must do?

You wrote.... “The national scene is also pock-marked by the antics of an immature President. Pres. Trump was elected PRESIDENT and the DEMOCRATS have NEVER been able to ACCEPT it. INSTEAD, they continue to CRITICIZE and MOCK him, DUE TO THIS LOSS and HATRED of him! I'll reverse your statement by noting that.... “Yes, the national scene is POCK-MARKED, but it's certainly NOT by 'the antics of an immature President'.....it's because of the DEMOCRATS who continue to BLEMISH our Country with their INFANTILE CONDUCT!

You wote.... “Lest the reader think that I blame Mr. Trump as the cause of our democratic deterioration, let me say I do not. He is a symptom....” One of the BIGGEST "SYMPTOMS” of “democratic deterioration” is, and has been caused by the DEMOCRATS SUPPORTING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, which is well PROVEN by their not wanting to have a WALL built! The AMERICAN PEOPLE are NOW coming in SECOND with the ELITE DEMOCRATS!

If Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Shumer don't like WALLS, why don't they have theirs [around their houses] KNOCKED DOWN? Have THEY PERSONALLY gone to the BORDER to check things out---on the ground----NOT in their PRIVATE JETS???

How would people FEEL if they KNEW the AMOUNT which is TRULY being FUNDED to SUPPORT ILLEGAL ALIENS in AMERICA? Enough Said!

AMEN!
