NRA Level 1 coaching class being offered Jan. 20-21

LINCOLN – Stony Brook Rod and Gun Club is looking for interested adults to serve as coaches for its junior rifle marksmanship program. A two-day training program will held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 20-21, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Smithfield Sportsmen Club, 14 Walter Carey Road, Smithfield.

Level 1 coach is the entry level for all NRA coaches trained to instruct beginning and intermediate shooters. The Level 1 coach candidate must be at least 18 years old and successfully complete the discipline-specific Level 1 Coach School, a two-day school consisting of both classroom instruction and on-the-range practical coaching exercises.

Stony Brook will pay for someone to attend the class, provided they commit to serving as one of the coaches for Stony Brook’s team. Stony Brook is located at 9 Lower Road, in Lincoln. The junior rifle marksmanship program is open to ages 12 to 20. Through the junior shooting program, Stony Brook’s goals include passing on the traditions of respect for firearms and a love of the shooting sports to the next generation.

The junior rifle program is a structured and supervised program providing responsible youth instruction on how to safely handle a .22 rifle, develop sound shooting techniques, and become comfortable with the different shooting positions associated with competition. Equipment is provided. The junior program runs from October to March, with a practice night once a week and a chance at competitions.
