Council rejects bid to extend hours at Dunkin’ Donuts on Mendon Road

CUMBERLAND – The Town Council last week turned down a request for an extended-hours license at the Dunkin’ Donuts at 1700 Mendon Road that would have allowed the store to open at 4 a.m.

Councilor Scott Schmitt said he previously rejected a similar request at a coffee shop on Diamond Hill Road, Marylou’s, which now opens at 5 a.m.

Dunkin’ Donuts on Diamond Hill Road also opens at 5 a.m. Honey Dew Donuts on Diamond Hill Road, diagonally across from Marylou’s, is the only store in that area allowed to open at 4 a.m.

Schmitt questioned whether bumping back times helps make Cumberland what it wants to be. There’s been much talk about the town “not being the Cumberland of yesterday,” which it never will be, but he questions the wisdom of adding more extended licenses because of that.

“To me, it’s essentially a 24-hour license, which I’m not in favor of,” said Schmitt. “I just don’t think it’s something the town needs.”

Councilor Bob Shaw said he favored granting the license, which would have reduced the nightly window of time the coffee shop had to stay closed from four hours, 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., to three hours, 1 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Shaw said he was also opposed to a 24-hour license for the coffee shop on Diamond Hill Road, since he was reluctant to see it become “a hot spot” like the stores right off Exit 10. He originally came up with the compromise to allow Marylou’s and the adjoining Shell station on Diamond Hill Road to open at 5 a.m.

Since the Gulf gas station right off Exit 10 on Route 295 is already operating 24 hours a day at the same address as the Dunkin’ Donuts, 1700 Mendon Road, it “gives a little more validity” to a 4 a.m. license at Dunkin’ Donuts, said Shaw, especially since this isn’t a residential area.

Schmitt said he understood Shaw’s point about the Gulf station being open around the clock, but still voted no to the extended hours for Dunkin’ Donuts. The council voted 5-2 against granting the extended hours for Dunkin’ Donuts, with only Shaw and Councilor Jim Metivier voting yes.

Councilor Lisa Beaulieu noted that if the council granted permission for a 4 a.m. opening at Dunkin’ Donuts, she would expect owners of Honey Dew Donuts on Mendon Road to ask for the same hours.
