Gordon shines, but NP falls to Pilgrim in football opener

NORTH PROVIDENCE – Pilgrim High stormed out to a 27-0 lead and never looked back in posting a 40-21 victory over North Providence High last Friday night in their non-league football opener at the Cougars’ Serio Field.

Despite the defeat, the Cougars received a solid game from senior quarterback Nevin Gordon, who in his first start behind center, threw for 109 yards, 36 coming on a touchdown pass to Zach Estrela and 15 on another TD strike to Matt Cook. Gordon also ran in a two-point conversion and kicked an extra point.

Travaughn Famogun also returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown for the Cougars, who will open their Division III schedule on Saturday with an 11 a.m. game on the road against Ponaganset High.
