Cougars open tennis season with wins over E.P., Tiverton, loss to Middletown

NORTH PROVIDENCE – The North Providence High girls’ tennis team kicked off its Division III schedule last week with mixed results, as the Cougars posted a 5-2 victory over East Providence last Tuesday, Sept. 5, but suffered a 6-1 loss to Middletown two days later in its home opener at Olney Park.

In the victory over the Townies, the Cougars swept the doubles matches behind the first doubles team of Gianna Montella-Hailey Mendes (6-3, 7-5), second doubles squad of Olivia Kooloian-Maya D’Amico (6-3, 6-2), and third doubles tandem of Tina Chen-Riley-Kate Pappas (6-1, 6-2).

Mary-Catherine Fornaro was also a 6-4, 6-4 winner in her second singles match, while Anne-Marie Vacca won her fourth singles match by 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 scores.

The loss to the Townies saw Chen and Pappas again team up in third doubles to record a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Kooloian and D’Amico also played well despite dropping a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 decision in second doubles.

The Cougars were back in action on Monday afternoon with a match against Tiverton, and thanks to Kooloian and D’Amico’s 6-4, 6-3 victory in second doubles, they were able to come away with a 4-3 victory.

Also winning matches for NP were Vacca in fourth singles, 6-3, 6-0, Montella and Mendes in first doubles, 6-1, 6-0, and Chen and Pappas in third doubles, 6-1, 6-1.

The Cougars are back in action today with a 3:30 p.m. match at West Warwick and on Friday with a 3:30 p.m. match at home against Pilgrim.
